No response from Make-A-Wish

I have shared with you my disappointment with the coordinator we had for Sophie’s Make-A-Wish trip. She was very delayed and did not communicate with me at all. She basically did not give a crap about my daughter or our family.

So I wrote a letter to the Make-A-Wish foundation about it because I wanted them to know how I felt. That was three months ago and I still have not received any correspondence from them, I was expecting a written apology but I did not even get that. I am very disappointed that such an important organization would be so neglectful.

Here is the letter I wrote them:

January 11, 2013
RE: Wish Child: Sophie ***********
Wish Date 12/2 – 12/8/ 2012
Dear Make A Wish Foundation,
I wanted share the experience of my daughter’s Wish granted to Disney World, Florida.
First, my daughter Sophie will be four in April, she was born with a rare genetic disorder called Cri du Chat Syndrome (a.k.a 5p-) where a portion of the short arm of chromosome five is missing. My daughter’s deletion happens to be quite large and she is delayed in many aspects of her development. Her immune system has been compromised since birth, and her bodies’ ability to fight off bacteria is almost nonexistent. She aspirates which can be deadly if she develops aspiration pneumonia; she is immune to most antibiotics, forcing us to use medications not approved for children in an effort to kill off bacteria and keep her alive. She has cardiac and liver complications combined with severe pan sinusitis; this has basically lead to an incurable sinus infection.
Sophie has bilateral hearing loss and is quite petite as a symptom of the syndrome. She does not know how to eat so is primarily on a thickened liquid diet.  Keeping her growing and at a healthy weight is a challenge in itself. Sophie also has PDD and needs a lot of sensory input to keep her calm and can have issues when she is out of routine or is set off by something in her environment. There is so much about her I could write a book on it all.
When her early intervention coordinator brought up the idea of having a Wish granted for Sophie I was horrified that she would suggest it, but after speaking with her doctor who said that it was an absolutely fitting idea to our situation and getting feedback from our support team they helped me see it as a positive experience. Waking up everyday knowing that your child can be taken from you with no control is the most unbearable feeling. It’s a sad and harsh reality I live with.
Sophie was approved for her wish while we lived in South Florida earlier in the year of 2012. In June of 2012 my family moved to North Carolina for better services for Sophie. I tried for several weeks to contact our local Chapter after our South Florida contact told me all of Sophie’s information had been forwarded. Neither Chapters made the effort to help communicate with each other about the transfer. When I finally made contact with the coordinator here, Ms. ********  she seemed very nice but hesitant as I explained what we had been told in FL about Sophie’s Wish.
Ms. *****  explained that the process would change a bit as we were now in NC and had to follow their policies, which was completely understandable to me. In the first few months she did reach out to me and inquired once or twice as I explained we had been told Sophie’s Wish had been approved for December 2012. We chose this date because Sophie does not sweat and could not be in the heat. After some back and forth she was finally able to set it up. There was no communication for a large gap of time and it took a while for Ms. ***** to respond to my emails when I would check in for an update.
As the wish date approached we discussed the travel method. I explained that Sophie is easily agitated and we had decided a flight would be better for her. Had I know the flights would include a five-hour layover I would have opted to drive. Had we driven we would have arrived 3-4 hours sooner than we did and I would have opted to not return home at 2 am. I traveled with my whole family, which included six other children in addition to Sophie. It was beyond stressful and had Ms. ***** talked to me about this I would have chosen to drive but she never reached out to me.
The lack of communication with her left little to be desired. In the weeks prior to our trip I had to request school letters for my children because the schools never received them, this took a good week to get after persistent emails. I also sent various emails and left various voice mail messages for Ms. ***** to contact me as we continued to approach the Wish date and because I was clueless as to what was going on.
I received the wish packet three days prior to our departure date.  I really felt like Ms. ***** left everything for last-minute and gave my family and my daughter no importance. I was overwhelmed and felt no reassurance.  When I made Ms. ***** aware of all this I felt that she was bothered by me and very short in her email response to me. A couple of hours later as if she realized what she sent me, she tried to be polite but it was far to late.
After speaking to other Wish families at the Give Kids the World Village they all had their packets a week or more in advance and had a great contact and caring relationship with their coordinator. I feel as though we were cheated on this part of the experience.
When we arrived at Give Kids the World we were beyond stressed and everyone was cranky and exhausted. Give Kids the World Village was amazing and all of its volunteers were great. The experience there was magical. This part of the trip was truly wonderful. The theme parks were great and we really enjoyed ourselves. Sophie was in heaven it was bittersweet but a wonderful experience.  The trip to Disney was the perfect wish for her. Sophie met the actress Ginnifer Goodwin while at Magic Kingdom and was included in the Lion King show at Animal Kingdom. All in all this has to be one of the most magical experiences a family can have.
I was disappointed that most of the other families had shirts and hats representing the Make A Wish foundation. It would have been nice if my family had received shirts and hats and not just a button. This is a way to represent the foundation and maybe you might want to take this into consideration for future wishes.  This would benefit both sides, maybe even a shirt that say’s I love a Wish child for the family members. This could make siblings and parents feel so much more involved and it gives a stronger sense of support too.
My intent in this letter is to share my experience, the good and bad of Sophie’s wish trip in hopes that another family does not have to feel the way we did. This was a once in a lifetime Wish for my child, so I expected or at least was hoping for the entire process to be a happy and positive experience. The negative portion of it all really took a toll on the overall experience for all of us.
And another tip, it would be really nice to see Make A Wish follow-up with the families after the Wish has been granted. It’s not just a free trip, it’s so much deeper and more powerful than you can imagine. The foundation has now become a part of my families’ journey. It should be a priority for the foundation to keep a positive relationship with Wish families, especially since no one knows what the future holds.
All of us families who have become receivers of a Wish for a loved one are real people, not just clients. We face obstacles many do not and overcome despair and heartache many could never endure. The volunteers and employees of the foundation should be educated on this, as it is so much more important than many could imagine. If you are interested in reading about Sophie’s wish in more detail you can visit my blog and read about Sophie’s Make A Wish trip there.
Should you wish to contact me, I have provided my email and home address. Additionally, I am not interested in receiving any further communications from Ms. *****  as she has already proved to me that this position of putting together wishes is not important to her.
Sincerely,
Charity De Leon

Sophie’s Make-A-Wish Day7

As we awoke to day seven it was accompanied by a bit of sadness. While we had a wonderful week it did fly by and we were not ready to return to reality. The trip home was dreaded by all of us but we decided to make the most of our last day. My best friend Glenna made the drive from West Palm Beach to spend a few hours with us. We spent the day walking around Give Kids the World Village, spent some time at the park, rode the carousel and had lunch and desert. We chatted and just enjoyed a relaxed day of great company and conversation.

Glenna headed out around 3pm and we headed to the airport, there were tears and heavy hearts but we knew it was time to head home. We love you Glenna!!!!!

We were so lucky to have had not just this wonderful experience but to have the opportunity to share it with some of our family and friends. Those who took time out of their busy lives to come out and spend time with us did more than I could have asked for. We may not have a ton of friends but I know the ones we do have are priceless. It’s wonderful to know that we do have family that cares, that love us enough to make time for us. That is after all what life is about.

Sophie’s wish was magical! Give Kids the World Village does not get enough credit, they were amazing. The theme parks were great and accommodating, all in all it was a wonderful trip. Minus the travel, that was awful. We did not reach home until two am on our return home, it was exhausting. I will be reaching out to Make A Wish to let them know how disappointed I was in the coordinating on our trip. This is a once in a life time wish, it should be prepared by people who actually care and take into account the delicate state of the child receiving the wish and not the convenience of the person putting it all together.

This magical experience will be in our hearts and memories forever!

On the eve of day five Tristan began to battle a fever overnight, he was miserable, coughing crying and burning up. His fever broke and he seemed to feel better after some motrin so we headed to Disney’s Magic Kingdom to spend the day. My cousins made the trip to spend the day with us; Maribel made the trip up from West Palm Beach and Yessenia from Gainesville. It was so wonderful to see them!

It really was a fantastic day. Tristan’s fever did return with some vomiting but we made it through the day. We made it our goal to ensure Sophie rode all the rides that were not too overstimulating and that she was tall enough for, it was a busy day. She rode and rode and rode and each time would leave us speechless with her tolerance and attentiveness to details. We enjoyed each others company and prayed that the days would slow down so we could savor these magical moments. The kids had a blast and Sophie was soaking in all the magnificent colors and energy around her.

The day was truly amazing! Sophie used this trip to prove to us she could communicate and was using more signs than ever. She even started to give kisses and her daddy  was the luckiest one! An added bonus to such an amazing week.

Yessenia & Sophie

We had such a wonderful day it was so sad to see it have to come to an end. Maribel headed out first, it was a sad goodbye. She and I were very close when we were younger and while we don’t see each other often there is a special bond there. Yessenia is my super intelligent young cousin and it’s hard to think she is not still only a teenager. They are both such amazing people I am proud to call them my family, amazing hearts and so much love that words are not needed.

Earlier this day my cousins attended the opening of the expansion to Fantasy Island where they saw Jordan Sparks the singer and Ginnifer Goodwin the actress. Ginnifer Goodwin is one of my personal favorite actresses, she has stared in many movies and in curerntly staring in NBC’s “Once Upon A Time” where she protrays Snow White. There is just something about her a gracefulness that is unexplained, an innocent air about her that makes me adore her. When I heard she was there I thought wow how amazing would it be to get her to take a picture with Sophie but it seemed too outrageous. The thought lingered in the back of my mind but I honestly thought it could never happen.

As we began our exit out of the park we walked right passed her, I turned as my heart skipped a beat and said to my cousin, Yessenia, “It would be amazing if she would take a picture with Sophie”. My cousin took off after her with hopes to catch up but was not successful as she disappeared in the crowed. My cousin felt really bad although I told her it was not big deal and thanked her for her efforts. I proceeded to the gift shop to get Sophie and Tristan their Disney hats. The rest of my group waited outside while I anxiously waited for the kids names to be embroidered on the hats. Sophie’s hat came out first and I snapped some pics and sent her out to wait with daddy while I waited for Tristan’s hat. That’s when my daughter Emily ran in excitedly and told me “Yessenia had got her”. What? I said and she replied, “Yessenia got the actress to stop with Sophie”. I ran out as fast as I could and arrived just and Ginnifer Goodwin was walking away and just in time to tell her “thank you, that I was Sophie’s mom and I really appreciated her taking the time to stop” she pleasantly stopped and said “oh no problem, I hope you are having a wonderful time”. She was SO REAL!

Ginnifer Goodwin and Sophie

I started to tear up as she walked away. It was as if meant to be, she walked right by them sitting there waiting for me and Yessenia seized the moment to ask her if she would take a picture with her cousin for her Make-A-Wish trip. They said she was so sweet and genuine, she stopped and took a moment to talk to Sophie and posed for pictures. Sophie liked her too!  She is as graceful in reality as she is in her movies. I hope she knows how much this moment meant to me, to us…priceless!

Thank you to my wonderful cousins for making the effort to see us, we love you both so much!!

Yessenia, YOU ROCK!!!!

To Ginnifer Goodwin, I hope fame never changes you and you are always as kind as you were on this day.

Bittersweet as we approach days six and seven but there is still more to come!

On this day we were once again blessed with beautiful weather and we headed out to Universal Studios. Again not too crowded so we were able to see the whole park. Sophie did the Twister simulator and did wonderful until the end where the floor dropped a bit and made a very loud metal clang noise, we could not get her out of there fast enough. She rode the Disaster ride and ET. On the ET ride she sat in her own seat and really enjoyed it so she got to go twice.

Grisel spent the day giving Sophie so much love, Sophie was loving it! She held her, hugged her and even made sure she got some walking in to stretch her legs throughout the day. It was great to have Grisel with us for the day!

Sophie even got to jump in the baby bounce house before we headed back to our villa.

We ended the day saying goodbye to Grisel, we were so happy she was able to spend this day with us to celebrate Sophie’s magical week. We had some Pollo Trpoical for dinner as the kids were dying for some since one of the places we miss from Florida. Sophie is getting sick and not feeling to well as she fought of a fever most of the day so finished the day early so we could all get some rest. I’m just hoping we can keep whatever is about to get her at bay until we return home.

It was another great day! No waiting in lines which really helps save time and enables you to see more of the park.  Today though, it was packed with alot of people! Maybe it’s just coincidence or maybe it’s because I am more aware now but I never realized how many wish children attended the theme parks. Not just from Make-A-Wish but from several organizations that basically provide a wish for individuals with life threatening illnesses or just special needs in particular. It was really great to see so many people truly enjoying the experience.

By the time we made it to Kilimajaro Safari she was all tuckered out! I’m liking these daytime naps, now if only she would do this at home.

We had lunch in Asia at the Yeti and Yak  cafe, it was so yummy! Sweet and sour chicken in a huge container definitely enough to fill you up for quite sometime. And then we headed to Lion King which has always been my favorite show of all the Disney theme park shows. This one broke me. We sat right upfront and my amazing daughter was thoroughly enjoying the show,  her attention to the show was amazing; her therapists would be proud.

Now this is the part that broke me. At the end of every show they take kids from the audience to participate as they dance around the floats and one of the dancers asked if she could take Sophie, of course I said yes! And so she became a part of the show, they wheeled her around like a princess and she even got to go right up to the float to touch it. I cried, I could not help myself the emotions were too strong. There was a bit of sadness but at the same time I felt so happy to see her participating as all the other kids were. Definitely a bittersweet moment but one I am most grateful for!

After the Lion King show we headed out to meet the Characters, Sophie loved it and was not scared of any of them. She even kissed one of them on the nose, not sure if it was Minnie or Mickey but I will have to post it once I have all my Disney photos from the Disney photographers. I was not fast enough to catch that with my camera. Precious moment it was even all the people waiting in the lines were touched by that moment.

We finished off the day at Give Kids the World Village where we had dinner, made pillows and made Sophie’s star which will be displayed at the Castle of Miracles on the ceiling with the stars of all the other children who have been guests at the village. It’s a bit saddening to all the stars there and know that all of those children were sick and you can only pray some of them are still with us. I will get to see the placement of Sophie’s star this evening I will be sure to share it with you all.

On day two we woke up to beautiful weather, had a great buffet breakfast and hung out while we waited for my brother to arrive to spnd the day with us from West Palm Beach. We walked around, snapped photos and rode the merry-go-round. This place is beautiful! Give Kids the World  is truly a magical place, the employees and volunteers are incredibly kind and helpful.

We decided to visit Universal’s Islands of Adventure, it was so much fun!

It’s was not overly crowded and it was somewhat cloudy so the sun was not too strong which was great because Sophie can overheat quickly. With our pass we did not have to wait in any lines and they were all so very nice and as soon as the employees saw my Give Kids the World  button and pass they immediately asked us how we were enjoying our day. We arrived around noon and left at 6:30 and were able to see the whole park.

I’m a big Harry Potter fan and was so excited to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, AMAZING!! The Hogwarts ride was INCREDIBLE! The best ride I have ever been on and my kids and brother thought the same, it was magical. I got myself a replica of Luna’s wand and had some Butterbeer!

Sophie had a blast she did not want to eat much but drank alot of water. In the evening she did eat a whole bowl of food for the first time in days and she even took a nap which is rare for her. Sophie is so happy I feel very grateful for this experience.
